AVERAGE water consumption in southeast Queensland has jumped and Gold Coast residents are the culprits. Usage has climbed to 158 litres per person per day.

This is up from an all-time low of 112 litres per head on July 11.

While this is below Target 170 (the 170-litre goal) that allows use of hoses for 30 minutes at weekends, the Queensland Water Commission is concerned.

The spike coincides with inclusion of consumption figures from the Gold Coast, which had been exempt from restrictions since early this year.

But when its Hinze Dam recently fell below 95 per cent it rejoined councils that impose watering bans.

And that pushed average consumption up to 158 litres.
